750,000 children a year witness domestic violence and in 90% of cases, the children were in the same or next room. The stress caused by witnessing domestic abuse and the mother’s distress following abuse causes a wide variety of responses in children. Children will often feel responsible for the abuse and it is important to let them know that it is not their fault.

If domestic abuse is present, there is also a greater risk of child abuse.

If you are concerned about children and domestic abuse, please call the National Helpline on 0808 2000 247 for advice on how to support them. If the child lives in Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea or Westminster, call Advance on 020 8741 7008.
